I had my tutorial with Birthe yesterday and it has really helped crystallise some of ideas about where I see my art work pitch going. I am beginning to realise that the work I want to make for this project probably does involve the public in some way and might not based in a traditional gallery setting. I think I am going to approach the work in a more open and flexible way and to let the work guide what shape it finally takes and be open to it being a public art piece rather than a fixed idea that it should belong to gallery setting.
I described this idea I had of creating an interactive light projection of a rhythmic motion of coloured lights which the viewer can interact with and some of the key questions I had identified i.e. what the projection was going to be, what material I would be projecting on and where the work would be sited. So far I had been tackling those questions in that order but she suggested that I tried to look at it the other way round i.e. I should consider the site first and in doing so, it might inform the work that I make and how I was going to do it. She also suggested that I look at the site Art Angel, and in particular the work of Roger Hiorns and Mike Nelson.
All in all, this has been quite revelatory as I have been shying away from public art...but I am now refocusing my research and approach to looking at my work in the public art context. I have booked myself onto Peter McCaughey's Psychic derive walk on thursday night to kick-off that process!
