I have been considering the different 'rhythms' that we find in the environment and one that I find especially interesting and beautiful is the movement of traffic at night, or more specifically the light emitted by night time traffic. Using my nikon D5200 I shot three separate clips of traffic with the aperture of the camera at the widest setting (f2.8) to create a pleasing bokeh effect with the light. These clips were layered in Finalcutpro with the opacity settings on. I have kept the sound on, but I am not convinced this is the way to go. The movie shown is a VERY rough edit. During the clip you can still discern a blurred image of a vehicle so that it is possible for the viewer to make a connection with traffic. I feel that the final piece should be even more abstracted so that these connections cannot be made. It should convey a more non-specific, universal feeling of rhythm. Also, you can see where I move the camera or adjust the aperture when the size of the light spots move quite abruptly or change size. I will experiment with changing the orientation of the frame to see how the movement changes from horizontal to vertical and with the sound off or a different sound all together. I am also considering recreating this idea in AfterEffects.
